Confusion, dysphasia, and asterixis following metrizamide myelography.
A patient exhibited confusion, dysphasia, and striking asterixis 18 hours after metrizamide myelography. The symptoms lasted for a day and a half. While metrizamide is a useful contrast medium, side effects are not unusual and can, on occasion, be quite severe.

Four (3.4%) of 117 patients undergoing metrizamide myelography experienced transient expressive dysphasia 7-8 hr after myelography and lasting up to 36 hr. All four patients had lumbar myelograms obtained with 15 ml of 190 mg I/ml (2850 mg I). Metrizamide was injected via lumbar puncture with a 20 gauge spinal needle under fluoroscopic control. Neurologic complications after metrizamide have be...
متن کاملTransient motor aphasia following metrizamide myelography.
Metrizamide, a water-soluble iodinated contrast agent for myelography, has been widely used in the United States for more than 4 years . Although acute generalized encephalopathy with confusion has been recog nized as a complication of metrizamide myelography, aphasia, with the connotation of focality that it entails, has seldom been reported [1, 2]. We describe two patients with a transient mo...
متن کاملComplete myelography with metrizamide.
Thorough myelography of the entire spinal cord including the foramen magnum region can be accomplished consistently and promptly after metrizamide injection via lumbar or lateral cervical puncture. When lumbar puncture is used the patient's torso is oblique, but the neck is prone and straight and the table is tilted 20 degrees head-down to allow direct cervical filling with contrast material. E...
متن کاملDiastematomyelia in children: metrizamide and CT metrizamide myelography.
Diastematomyelia is an uncommon dysraphic lesion of the spine which has been diagnosed more frequently since the advent of newer diagnostic methods. A series of 21 cases was examined using metrizamide myelography and computed tomographic metrizamide myelography (CTMM) over a 3-year period. These examinations, in addition to plain radiographs of the spine, have demonstrated certain features of d...
